Sprüngli, Zurich

This is the first of a series of posts on my Europe trip covering Switzerland-Austria-Germany. Starting off with morning breakfast in Zurich city, which is conveniently located within a 30 mins metro ride from the airport.

Chose to visit Confiserie Sprüngli as they are well known for its signature macarons called “Luxemburgerli”. Secondly cos they have a cafe located within close proximity to the other famous sights (Fraumünster & Grossmünster) in Zurich city. The cafe is also located along the main shopping street – Bahnhofstrasse, happens to be one of the world’s most expensive and exclusive shopping avenues.


On the first storey is their retail store for customers to buy their wide variety of confectionery items. The cafe is located on the second storey for dining-in customers and they have breakfast & lunch menu available.

At 9am on a weekday morning, the cafe was packed with people. Most of the diners don’t look like tourists nor office workers, rather they seemed to be retirees enjoying a chat and having their morning breakfast.

It was a free seating cafe hence we had to self-help to look for available seats. With our backpacks in tow, we struggled to navigate through the rather closely spaced tables & chairs…At the same time we had to be careful not to knock into the customers whom largely looked quite senior and abit frail…

Finally we managed to get seats at a large communal table after waiting for the huge group to clear out. However we were aruptly “shoo-ed” away by another local group of aunties who came from behind us and said that they have 6 people and wanted the whole table by themselves! We told them that there were only 2 of us and we don’t mind sharing table, but they were rather adamant in wanting the large table to themselves when there were clearly enough chairs to seat all of us. *It was a rude shock and I was stumped at the way they bullied us.*

Frankly I wouldn’t have moved away if not for guests at another table nearby who were about to leave and saw our “stand-off” with the aunties. The guests kindly offered us to take over their seats which was a table for 4 pax. As mentioned, the cafe was really packed and soon enough an old man came to ask if he could be seated at the empty seats next to us which we gladly obliged.

Thankfully the service staff was quite efficient and came to take our orders promptly. As the menu was written in German, we could only make an intelligent guess that the picture with a coffee and some pastisseries is a set meal as it costs CHF14 (ard S$20). For CHF14, we got a cup of cappuccino and 8 “Luxemburgerli”. The “Luxemburgerli” were slightly smaller than the size of our standard macaroons, it tasted rather similar to macaroons too. Perhaps the slight difference was”Luxemburgerli” are less sweet, more airy and lighter in texture.

Being hungry from the not-so-satisfying meal onboard the plane, we bought another tart chosen from the display shelves. The cream was velvety and chocolate was thick.

We had to move on promptly after finishing our meal as there were lurking eyes hovering over us for seats pretty quickly.


Did some sightseeing around Zurich city and bought some Laderach chocolates which was said to have excellent champagne truffles. We ended up buying not only the pralines which were sold in pieces, we were fascinated by the large varieties of chocolate slabs sold by weight on display and can’t help buying a few slabs to try. The shop was located right opposite the main train station and we conveniently head back to collect our luggage from lockers and took the next available train that would bring us to Zermatt, ending our short stop-over in Zurich.
