Araxi, Whistler

I must admit, I got to know Araxi only after watching Hell’s Kitchen hosted by Chef Gordon Ramsey… so naturally I got high expectations for this place which Chef himself sang praises of.

Initially I thought the restaurant was a “fine dining” place, serving degustation menu in a formal dining hall etc. Instead, the atmosphere in the restaurant was casual, most diners came in groups, relaxing and chatting over dinner.

We ordered a wine from Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa Valley, which we would be visiting soon.

I understand that the menu features the freshest seafood catches direct from the Pacific Ocean, hence seafood dishes were definitely our top choices!

Local Mushrooms thinly sliced with arugula and shaved parmesan cheese
– Very ordinary dish, nothing much to comment

Dungeness Crab Roll wrapped in yuba sheet with avocado and egg
– Something from their sushi menu, yuba sheet is basically our tofu skin. What I liked about this dish was it had tinge of refreshing mint taste.

Shellfish Platter 6 BC oysters, 5 wild prawns, half pound Read Island mussels, house prepared cocktail sauce and Shady Glen raspberry mignonette
– One of the highlight of the dinner, fresh seafood and juicy prawns! Delightful.

Canada Triple A (Alberta) Tenderloin served with North Arm rainbow chard, carrots and Pemberton potato croquettes, toasted peppercorn sauce and chimichurri sauce
– I liked the croquette as much as the steak which was cooked perfectly.

Wild Alaskan Scallops served on a bed of local sunchoke risotto, crispy artichoke and baby herb salad, ginger and white wine veloute
– My favorite dish for the night. The white wine veloute tasted fantastic! It brought out the freshness of the huge juicy scallops.

Ended the dinner with petite fours and after trying the white chocolate macaroon, I bought an extra box of 6 pieces back as snacks =)

Nice restaurant, but lacks the WOW factor. Perhaps I had too high expectations after seeing it featured in Gordon Ramsey’s show. But its still worth visiting them,  they were after all consistently named as the best restaurant in Whistler~
