Kan Sushi

As usual, I resisted eating Japanese food in Singapore after returning from Japan for a while but fell to temptation and visited Kan Sushi in International Plaza.

Nestled on level 2 of the building, this cozy eatery is said to be owned by a Japanese Chef who mans the counter himself. Upon entering the restaurant, it was easy to spot that most of the guests were Japanese – perhaps an optimistic indication of the authenticity and quality of food.

We were shown to a table and a Japanese lady was around to take our order. We went for a Cold Tofu appetizer, a Spider Maki followed by mostly nigiri sushi including Hotate, Aji, Kinmedai, Uni, Ikura, Engawa and Tamago.

While we understand that the restaurant was about 80% filled, most diners were already mid-way through their meal. We spotted the Chef chatting with guests seated at the counter as we waited patiently for our missing Chu Toro. The lady who took our orders came by to collect our empty plates as we continued to sit and sip our sake. I guessed she sensed something amiss as we finished our food but was still not leaving…After checking our order, they realised that we were short of our last piece of sushi.

Sadly I wasn’t that impressed by the look of the wrinkly cut, it certainly didn’t look plump but it was still decently fresh.

Left the restaurant feeling that we weren’t very welcomed compared to the other Japanese clientele…
