House of Small Wonder, Berlin

House of Small Wonder, a whimsical café with a Japanese Twist, was an accidental discovery. Initially, we had intended to dine at another establishment within the same building, but serendipity led us to this spot instead.

Mentaiko Spaghetti Originating in Tokyo in the mid 1900s, a popular Japanese fusion pasta: spicy cod roe, cream, butter and a splash of soy sauce topped with shiso, nori seaweed and scallops and Irish Cappuccino.

Miso Honey Mustard Ribs “Fall-off-the-bone” oven baked ribs with our miso-honey-mustard glaze. Served with creamy mashed cauliflower and roasted seasonal vegetables.

Checkpoint “Charlie” is the best known official crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War.

It took its name from the NATO alphabet: the members of the Allied armed forces reached the Berlin city center via Checkpoint A (Alpha), Checkpoint B (Bravo) and Checkpoint C (Charlie) at Friedrichstrasse. It was designated as a crossing point for the members of the Allied armed forces where they left West Berlin for East Berlin and became a famous border crossing.

In Berlin, there are several places where you can see the remains of the original Berlin wall. This one which runs for about 200 metres along Niederkirchnerstraße is just a short walk from Checkpoint “Charlie”. I was surprised to see how thin it was. The Topography of Terror Museum (comprising of an outdoor and indoor display) is located at the site and it tells the history of what happened in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. A history buff can probably spend an entire day at this location.

East Side Gallery is the largest open-air gallery in the world. At 1.3km long, situated along the eastern bank of the Spree River, it is the longest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still in existence. One of the most photographed art work is this one (left), known as the “Fraternal Kiss” I only got to know that this painting is not fictitious but reproduced from a photograph taken in 1979. The artist first created the graffiti painting in 1990 and was commissioned to repaint the mural in 2009.

Passed by this magnificent building on our way to lunch. Cute scooter with nice backdrop. Found out that it’s the former Imperial Post Office (Kaiserliches Postfuhramt).
