Having eaten Schnitzel in restaurants in Singapore, I’ve always thought that it’s just a fancier and glorified name for “cutlet”. So why should we travel all the way to Austria to eat cutlet that is widely available at the neighbourhood Western food stall in our Singapore kopitiams?
Notwithstanding our skepticism, we decided that we need to tick off the bucket list of having eaten Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna. Shortlisted Skopik & Lohn for their artsy and chic style.
From the serving of bread and butter, we spotted fun elements such as the butter wrapped as candies and the paper basket.
Menu was a simple 1-page affair with Starter, Soup, Main, Side Order and Dessert sections. We chose to start with the Marinated Salmon with Red Beet, Horse Radish and Kumquat as we were craving for fish…The region we visited for this trip was more inland hence features more of pork and beef than harvests from the sea. The marinated salmon was nicely cured and made a wonderful starter. I secretly wished that the portion could be more generous.
My wish for bigger portion seemed to have been heard when we saw the huge schnitzels served to neighbouring tables! Thankfully we had only ordered one portion to share as we were wary of falling sick from eating too much heaty stuff.
The schnitzel served here are Wiener Schnitzel made with veal as per traditional way. But at some places schnitzel could also be served using chicken or pork.
Although when served they looked as huge as my palm while all puffed up, inside it was actually a piece of veal pounded really thin! I guess this is the key difference between real wiener schnitzel versus cutlet?! Of course, I’m amazed by how the batter could form an air pocket between the meat inside and the breadcrumb crust outside?
After taking a bite of the fried dish, it was refreshing to pair it with the crunchy cucumber salad in a dill yogurt sauce served together as one of the two sides included in the main course. The other side was the more filling potato salad.
Finished our meal with the Chocolate Tarte with Salted Caramel and Black Sesame Ice Cream. A nice sweet and salty contrast dessert which was equally satisfying.

Spent the day exploring some sights that we missed during our previous trip such as the Prater – a large public park that also houses an amusement park. The Giant Ferris Wheel in the amusement park is one of Vienna’s most famous symbols.
Amusement park is obviously not a popular choice in the midst of the cold winter!
Did you know that Austria is the World capital of crystal making? The famous Swarovski crystal is company is founded in Wattens, Austria. There are a few Crystal World store around Austria, including one in Vienna. We were just walking by when the dazzling display caught my eyes.
Saw the Autumn leave shaped Starbucks Cards in Vienna and we queued to ask if they are free to take? Although they are we still went ahead to purchase a cup of coffee from them in appreciation. Over the next few days, we would pop into Starbucks stores to see if there are other designs available and grab a cuppa if we were in need of a drink.
