★ Lei Garden Restaurant, Singapore

Somehow I have craving for fine chinese dining recently and decided to visit Lei Garden Restaurant in Chijmes – their only outlet left in Singapore after the Orchard one closed. When I visited Hong Kong, we ever passed by their outlet inside IFC and was packed. But we had other priorities then and didn’t arrange for a meal there.

Back to Singapore, I hadn’t been visiting the eateries in Chijmes for quite a long while. I didn’t even know that they had undergone a revamped until my current visit.  While looking for the Lei Garden I wandered around the Chijmes compound and noticed many new family friendly eating places unlike the previous tenant mix that comprised mostly of pubs and bar. Nonetheless I remained pretty focused on getting my Chinese food craving fixed.

The restaurant was pretty full for a weekday crowd although we still managed to get a table without having to wait. We were pleasantly surprised that they are having a Wine Pairing Promotion where we could select 2 dishes from 4 options available plus a bottle of wine for $99++. =)

Opted for the promotion without further hesitation as the dishes were exactly what we liked. Had the Sauteed scallops with asparagus and black fungus and Barbecued half Peking duck. The wine was a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from Château Favray, Pouilly Fume France.

The delectable Peking duck skin was sliced next to our table and served with the egg crepe, scallion and sweet bean sauce. The meat was then chopped and served plain or alternatively for a top-up sum they can prepare it in other methods.

Ordered an ala-carte portion of their signature Roast pork belly with mustard dipping sauce. The crisp pork skin was crackling with every bite while the meat was soft and tender. I’m not a fan of roast pork belly but found this very well executed.

Ended our meal with ala-carte dessert of Baked custard bun.

Had a truly satisfying meal to raise my gloomy mid-week spirit.

Montana Brew Bar & Nookie Yogurt

Was in the Selegie area for lunch and had recced Nookie Yogurt previously, but it was a rainy day so none of us wanted to have a cold dessert. Waited for an opportune weather, on a hot & sunny day whereby we went to have lunch at Montana Brew Bar so that we could try the yogurt from the same shop.

Had their Southern Fried Chicken Waffle Sandwich that had a nice wasabi salad dressing. The chicken was moist and tender, though I felt underwhelmed by the signature dish here.

Montana Brew Bar and Nookie_01Hopped over to Nookie to have a Mango Sticky Rice yogurt after the meal. The dessert had a myriad of textures and tastes in a cup. The yogurt had slight tartness, the coconut milk tasted slightly savoury, along with sweet fresh mango pieces and most significantly the generous cookie crumbles. To me, it was a rather unusual combination…but I still managed to finish 90% of the cup.

Tess Bar & Kitchen

While passing by Seah Street, we spotted several new eateries here. Seah Street usually has less human traffic compared to the neighbouring Purvis street as most of the eateries then to be concentrated there. Decided to try Tess Bar & Kitchen since we were just looking for a light meal and their menu comprises of small plates.

Had their Tiger prawns in herb garlic butter which was grilled and had a soft sweet flesh.  The Pan-seared scallops were nicely seared and the mash potato was soft and fine.

The Baby octopus, chorizo & sundried cherry tomatoes had chewy octopus with smokey chorizo. The most disappointing dish was the Roast angus beef as it was slightly dry.

Both cocktails ordered were pretty good – Wolf of Seah Street and Mariachi.

Kilo at Pact [Closed]

With the original Kilo located at the rather inaccessible Kampong Bugis, I hadn’t found any opportunity to visit them. While I was cracking my head over what to eat in Orchard Central, Kilo at Pact came to my mind.

The casual eatery set-up tucked in a corner of the maze-like Orchard Central serving Jap-inspired cuisines was just what I needed for dinner.

An interesting find on the menu was the Raw’s Seafood Ceviche Tuna, salmon, octopus, thai chilli-lime dressing. Not a Jap food per se but I did enjoy this refreshing starter.

Next we had Pan-seared Salmon wasabi mash, grilled veggies & white-wine shimeiji mushrooms and Mentaiko Spaghetti tossed in cod roe, spring onions and shoyuEnjoyed the grilled veggies, mash and reasonably fresh salmon. The spaghetti was al-dente, savoury and flavoursome.

Nespresso Limited Edition Capsule – Monsoon Malabar

Nespresso introduced their Limited Edition Capsule for 2015 – Monsoon Malabar. It has an intensity level of 8.

In its marketing comms, they described Monsoon Malabar as “a unique coffee bean aroma induced by the sea winds and humidity”. I wondered if the beans have the smell of the sea?! Hmm…their tasting notes did say it’s tinged with subtle salty notes.

After tasting it at home, I do think this limited edition capsule has an acquired taste – which I think is somewhat musty? Not that its bad, just that it’s not a flavour which is palatable to all taste buds.
