Kikuyo Shokudo Honten きくよ食堂 本店, Hakodate

One of our key considerations when choosing our accommodation in Hakodate was the proximity to the Hakodate Morning Market. This was so that we could wake up later and yet arrive before the busload of tourists flood the place.

I read that the market stalls supposedly opens from 6am onwards, but an enthusiastic blogger who went at 7am reported that most stalls are not opened yet… So we decided to make our way to the market for breakfast around 9am. Found Kikuyo Shokudo Honten easily with their yellow signboard. Apparently they have 2 outlets in the market and we went to the main outlet.

Although this is a rather traditional Japanese joint, ordering food here was a breeze as they provided picture menu for visitors. We tried the Rice topped with 4 ingredients: Uni, Ikura, Crab and Hotate (¥ 1680) and the Salmon ‘parent and child’ yukke with ikura don. The set comes with pickles and miso soup. The ingredients used for the rice bowls were really fresh and we had no problem finishing the carb-loaded breakfast.

As I had ordered the smaller sized rice bowl, there was still space for some nice tamagoyaki to end my meal. Usually I find the ones in Singapore are too sweet for my palate, but this one was not as sweet and cooked perfectly to a firm yet light texture.

With our stomachs filled, we continued with our exploration of the market. As we’ve visited the morning market over 2 days, I’ll be summarising the sights and snacks in a later post.
