London Fat Duck

After reading the raving reviews of London Fat Duck on various media, especially with quotes like “it trumps Four Seasons!” convinced me to visit them to try it for myself even before trying the Four Seasons Restaurant Singapore outlet. Being a fan of Four Seasons and Gold Mine duck rice in London, I visited London Fat Duck with high expectations after reading the amazing accolades they had received.

Sadly the whole experience was horribly wrong for me. The portion of roast duck didn’t look anywhere close to those I’ve seen on Instagrams/Facebook posts. It didn’t taste like what people had described…it doesn’t even looked appetising the moment it was placed on my table. My duck had a dull gravy, skin that didn’t looked crisp; the only thing that possibly looked right was the layer of fats that lived up to the name of “Wagyu Duck”.

Taste wise, the skin was soggy and the meat was tough, it pales in comparison to the reviews I’ve read about…

That wasn’t the most disappointing dish, the Char Siew (Barbecue Pork with Honey) was worse. It totally looked as-if it was cooked by a different Chef/Restaurant. No charred taste, no caramelised taste…it made me do a double-take to check whether I was at the right restaurant?!

The marked differences in what I read about and what I actually saw and tasted was irreconcilable. I was truly convinced that all the raving comments were actually extremely polished marketing tactics. Until I heard from my friends who visited the place told me a different story. So here’s the comparison photos of what I had and what others had.

The skin looked visibly different from the 2 photos.

The Char Siew sure looks delectable in the other photo…

I can only blame it on my luck that I went on a day whereby perhaps the
Chef was on leave?! Or it goes to show that there is severe lack of consistency in the quality the place delivers…

Would I return to give them another chance? Only if I can be assured that the food is of the quality that they claimed to be…
